チェスの歴史について
はじめに
この記事では、古代インドから現代までのチェス史を概観します。
ただし、チェスの歴史はきわめて起伏に富み変遷が激しいため、学術的に不明確な点がまだまだ多いそうです。予めご了承下さい
1.インド チャトランガの遊戯化(6世紀)
チェスや将棋の起源は、チャトランガ(chaturanga)という古代インドのボードゲームです。
これは、もともと軍事の図上演習として使われていた道具が、6世紀から7世紀にかけて遊戯化されたものだと考えられています。
ちなみに、チャトランガの記述として最も古いものは、インドのハルシア王の伝記『ハルシャチャリタ』(630-640)だと言われています。
2.ペルシャ帝国へ伝わる(6-7世紀)
チャトランガは、戦争や貿易を通じて北方のペルシャ帝国サーサーン朝(現イラン)に伝えられました。
イランにおける最古のチェス文献『マーティカーネ・シャトランジ(Matikan chatrang)』から、当時の駒の性能や装飾を伺うことができます。また、ペルシア語で王を表す単語であるシャー(shah)が、転じてチェス(chess)になったそうです。
3.アラブへ伝わる(7世紀)
642年の「ニハーヴァンドの戦い」でアラブ・ムスリム軍に敗北することで、ペルシャ帝国は崩壊しました。
その際、他のペルシャ文化と共にチェスもイスラム世界へ伝わりました。まだ駒の種類も性能も現在とは異なっていますが、今日の抽象的な駒のデザインは、偶像を否定したイスラム教の教義の影響を受けたようです。
4.ヨーロッパへ伝わる
イスラム世界の拡大に伴って、スペインを経由して西ヨーロッパに、カスピ海を経由してロシアへ伝わります。
広範な各地へ普及する仮定で、様々な地方ルールが創られ、次第にアラブ型と異なる形態に進化しました。
例えば、キリスト教の影響からビショップが生まれ、聖母マリアへの信仰が強力なクイーンを産んだとも言われています。また、ギャンブルの道具として使われたことも、様々な層へ浸透した大きな要因でした。
5.ルールの現代化
近世のチェスプレイヤーたちの拠点は、酒場やコーヒーハウスでした。
チェスの発展に伴って、チェス専用のクラブの需要が高まります。
まず1772年にロンドンで、次いでパリで組織されました。
チェスクラブの普及は、強豪同士の交流や熟練したプレイヤーからの指導など多くのメリットがありました。加えて、各地のクラブが連係することで、ルールの統一が進み、国際的なトーナメントも行われるようになりました。
また、賭博を禁止し賞金制に移行することで、プレイヤーのマナーは向上し、賭博から紳士の知的遊戯という社会的な評価を得ることにも成功しました。
6.FIDE設立から現代
国際的な広がりを受けて、1924年に世界チェス連盟(FIDE)が設立、パリで最初のチェス・オリンピアードが開催されます。
設立当初のFIDEの力は強いものではありませんでしたが、今日では行われる大会の殆どがFIDEのルールや諸規則を尊重して行なわれるほど強い影響力を持っています。
また、1999年に国際オリンピック委員会(IOC)に国際競技連盟として承認されたことで、単なる遊戯ではなくマインドスポーツとして認められることになりました。

1867 | Mechanical game clocks are introduced in tournament play. |

1997 | Garry Kasparov loses a rematch to chess supercomputer Deep Blue, becoming the first World Champion to lose a match to a computer. |
2002 | Sergey Karjakin becomes the youngest ever Grandmaster at age 12 years and 7 months. |
2007 | Viswanathan Anand becomes the fifteenth World Chess Champion after winning the World Chess Championship 2007 tournament held in Mexico City. Anand finished the tournament with a score of 9/14. |
2008 | Former World Champion Bobby Fischer dies in Iceland at age 64. |
2010 | Chess therapy was explored by Alexian Center For Mental Health at the South Elgin Rehabilitation Center in Elgin, Illinois. |
2012 | Magnus Carlsen achives a record breaking elo rating of 2861 surpassing Garry Kasparov's record of 2851. |
